Press-Fit Vs. Slip-On Finials

Finials are decorative post caps that serve as protective barriers for posts, but also as a creative, visual accent to an otherwise ordinary fence or railing. Finials are offered in three unique styles: Triad, Quad, and Fleur de Lis. The best way to differentiate the three styles of finials is to count the points, as well as look at how intricate the design is on the post cap. As mentioned in the names, Triad style finials have three points, making a spear shape, while the Quad style has four points for a more arrow-like shape. The Fleur de Lis is similar to the Triad in the fact that it often only has three points, but what makes it different is that there is more decorative detailing within the points. Fleur de Lis is commonly found in French-style architecture and is synonymous with New Orleans.

If you are looking to add these stylish post caps to your fence or railing system, you might have noticed that they often mention being either press-fit or slip-on for installation, which can be confusing to understand.

Press-fit finials are designed to have a tight, permanent placement on the post they are installed to and do not involve extra securing like welding or screws. While slip-on options have a little more wiggle room and offer flexibility if wanting to change the style later on. Slip-on versions often come with the option to permanently secure the finial to the post with pre-drilled screw holes. However, there are slip-on finials that do not have the option to fasten the cap to the post.
